In Memoriam Chase Jay Nielsen 1917 ~ 2007 By The Associated Press
BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (AP) _ Lt. Col. Chase J. Nielsen, a member of the famed "Doolittle Raiders" who bombed Japan in 1942, died Friday at his home, his family said. He was 90, leaving 14 surviving Doolittle Raiders.
Lt. Col. Chase J. Nielsen was the navigator on a B-25B "Mitchell" medium bomber, Serial 40-2298, number 6 in the takeoff order of April 18, 1942, one of 16 B25's each with a crew of 5 men on board, 80 men made that mission. None of the planes reached the Chinese airfields after the raid (though all but a few of their crewmen survived), 8 men were captured by the Japaneses of which 3 were executed.
Lt. Col. Chase J. Nielsen was the sole survivor from his crew and was one of those men captured and held as a POW.
We must never forget the sacrifices of men like this, who went on a suicide mission to strike at the heart of the enemy's homeland, delivering the message that we will win.
This is a concept that is lost on most Americans today.
